A gift from Corey for your project

Digital Flash cards available from any computer or mobile device browser are now available for Units 6 and 7. http://iflipr.com/deck/search?query=UNH+Ruwa
I suggest using the http://www.alkitaabtextbook.com/books/ website to hear the sound of the word if you are unsure.

New stuff:
Color coding is the same as the book. Green is Egyptian, Purple is Levantine, Blue is formal.
If you are only focusing on one dialect just click the green "Correct" mark for cards you dont care to learn and you wont be asked them again.

Ruwa suggested going over all of our vocab to get an idea of what language we have available to us for the final. This may be a good use of these decks.

Please notify me of any mistakes you find.

Respectfully,

Corey Nesk

After Thanksgiving

Dear students:

Due to the many hard circumstances that I've been dealing with relating to my move, and the lack of sleep resulting from that, I feel unfit and unable to teach today. Please continue with studying the material on your own, as though we were in class. You would be doing me and yourselves a favor by doing so, because when we come back from عيد الشكر hopefully better rested, we can go about finishing our material full speed.

Monday calss and final presentations

اهلا يا شباب

Arabic 401:

Please come to class on Monday, having prepared to share your written composition (in fuSHa)with class. You're not required to memorize it, however, please familiarize yourselves with it, so that you're comfortable reading it in class.

Also, I wanted us to talk about the final presentation. This Monday's take-home quiz is meant to be a good practice for that. Your final presentation will be a better, more substantial form of this quiz. Let's talk some more about that in class tomorrow.

Arabic 503:

There will not be a class on Monday,November 22, due to the need to be at the inspection of my new home. I do hope for your forgiveness.

Please come to class on Tuesday, having memorized your new مفردات. We will also talk about your final presentation. It will be a composed piece, much like your Midterm paper, which will use a healthy and rich variety of concepts and vocabulary. This will show me the extent to which, you've both learned and reviewed, your material from this semester. You will of course be expected to read it in class, and so your oral presentation will count for 50% of your grade.

We'll have the chance to talk about that in class on Tuesday.

preparing for Monday's class

طلابي الاعزاءفي 503

Please come to class having viewed القصة as many times as it takes, to be able to answer the questions. To aid you in this process, please use تمرين21 which we did in class. Please rehearse, so that you feel at ease using your language skills in class tomorrow. Let's have fun.

Tullaabi fii 401 :

Please familiarize yourselves with your skits to the point of feeling comfortable talking, as though in a real invironment. Try to use as many of your vocabulary words from throughout the semester. We will spend a lot of time on vocab, both Egyptian and fuSHa, and skits in class tomorrow. I look forward to having fun with you.

Monday

اهلا يا طلاب

Arabic 401:

I'm looking forward to having fun watching your skits, using as much as possible of your new and old vocabulary.

Arabic 503:

Please have ALL your new vocabulary be memorized, so that we can do some translation with ease. Also, bring any questions you have about the take-home quiz to class.

Corey's flash cards

Ahlan my fellow student,

I’ve created computerized flashcards that are accessible from any computer or mobile device. I will be adding to this collection of “digital card decks” as the semester goes on as well as into next semester of Arabic. I can see that some have already started using them.

The decks currently include:

-Units 1-3 vocab from charts

-Unit 4's numeral chart

-All of the vocab we can write out plus additional words given to us by Ruwa (this deck will grow as the year goes on)

This list will grow as the year goes on.

To access the files go to http://www.iFlipr.com

Then click Decks, then search, then type UNH. You will see the decks there.

There is a 5 dollar iphone app available as well that will load faster than using your mobile phone browser.

I only ask that as a service you email me and correct me when you have found a mistake and in addition help me start an Arabic support group to work on homework together even if its over web cams. Thank you.

For Monday

Aizzaai-Tullaab fi Arabic 401,

In addition to coming on Monday well prepared with written sentences of greetings and introductions to activate in class, I would like to remind you of the following. Do drill 9, and drill 10 , and practice reading the words in drill 11. We will go over all that in class.

اعزائي الطلاب في Arabic 503,

Don't forget to review your المفردات, and learn the Ordinal Numbers, as well as study "What time is it?"

Two IA alumni give public talks

A public talk that two IA alumni will give on October 8 from 10:00 to 11:30 am at the Mub Entertainment Center.

Daniel Hilliard (’88), an international studies and political science major, is executive director of the Zoo Conservation Outreach Group, an organization affiliated with the Audubon Zoo and concerned with the preservation of species in Latin America. He is an adjunct assistant professor at the Georgetown University Public Policy Institute.
Robert Leavitt (’88), who paired his international affairs major with English, works in the White House where he is a National Security Council director for Africa.

I can imagine that the career paths of those 2 men may be an inspiration for a lot of our dual IA and language majors. For more information please go to:

Interesting events to attend

Just relaying this announcement from the department of anthropology:

Dear Colleagues: I would like to ask you to encourage your students to come to two events taking place this week. Both of these events are significant as they are meant to inform the students about contemporary lives of Muslims in different parts of the world; political and social activism by Muslim women and men; and struggle with contemporary critical issues, indeed global in their scope, such as economic depression and political oppression and violence.

The first event is a documentary “Inside Islam: What a Billion Muslims Really Think” truly lives up to its title. It is a 50 min. intense and interesting film based on in-depth research carried out by the Gallup Poll. The documentary will be screened on Tuesday, March 23d at 12:40 pm (MUB 332). This event is envisioned as an opening part of the 2010 Holden Lecture, which will be given by a famous scholar of gender, politics and Islam, Dr. Margot Badran.

Dr. Badran’s lecture “Islamic Feminism Today,” is 2010 Holden Lecture sponsored by John T. Holden Memorial Fund in the COLA, the Department of Anthropology and Center for the Humanities. It will take place on Thursday, March 25th at 12:40 pm (MUB 334/336).

Please, join us at these events.

For your exam on March 26, keep the following in mind. Think of it as a cumulative test that covers all vocabulary and grammatical concepts which you have learned thus far. For Arabic 402, it should be one paragraph, or up to a page if double spaced. For Arabic 504, it should be two paragraphs, or up to two pages if double spaced. You will be required to read it in class, and you will be judged on your ability and ease of reading. Feel free to write to me or Faris if you have any questions.
