For your Midterm

Arabic 401,

Let's stop at the end of Unit 6, for both vocabulary and spelling.

Arabic 503,

It is apparent to me from correcting your homework, that you need to go back further in your reviewing for the Midterm. Many of you will need to go back to page 57 to review الفعل المضارعand its conjugation.

Preparation for class

Ahlan Ya Tullaab Fi Arabic 401,

I need you to go back and review "ghayn" for class on Wednesday. Read the manner of production, in addition to using the alphabet chart to watch, listen and practice saying it. Then go back to "raa" and do the same to contrast the two. Unless you do that, you will always have a problem with these and other sounds that are difficult for you to produce. We can go back and practice in class over and over, but that will never suffice.

اهلا يا طلاب في Arabic 503,

For class on Thursday,

I need you to go over تمرين 3, and familiarize yourselves with how to translate it. That way when we do it in class, we don't take too long. Make sure you know your new المفردات. We will also be doing تمرين 6 in class. In order for you to memorize the verb chart on page 149, you must know how to conjugate Kaana كان. Please go back and read that section if you don't feel very sure about it.

A fun read

A'izzaa'i Al-Tullaab,

Please find below a blog site that tells about a young man's, almost daily, impressions of his visit to Egypt. Hope you enjoy it.

Study Abroad

Ahlan Yaa Shebaab,

Please find below information, that I hope will be useful in guiding you to take your first steps in planning your study abroad program.

. Here are some suggestions:

1. The first step is to attend the study abroad sessions conducted every Thursday, 1:00 in McConnell Hall RM 312 by Mr. Jeff Sherman. There is lots of preparation involved, and you’ll need to know the details…even if you are a freshman. For more information, see http://www.unh.edu/cie/studyabroad/planning.html

2. You need to check out the study abroad materials located at the Center for International Education’s library on the second floor of Hood House, which includes various academic programs in Asia.

3. There are several opportunities to finance your trip. Consider the following:

4. The Boren Scholarship http://www.borenawards.org/boren_scholarship. Usually students apply to go in their junior year, and there is a time commitment to work with the US government. An information session at Hood House will be conducted at the end of October/beginning of November . Deadline is Feb 10, 2010.

5. A new initiative is the National Language Service Corps, which will provide jobs for students who are competent in the critical languages. For more information, see http://www.nsep.gov/corps/index.html

6. Also consider applying to the various Fulbright programs to conduct research or to teach English. For more information, go to: http://us.fulbrightonline.org/overview.html or see Sheila McCurdy at Hood House.

Upcoming Quiz

Marhaba Ya Tullaab Fi Arabic 401,

You will have a couple of short quizzes coming up. The first one will be on Thursday October 8. This will be on your new vocabulary from page 57, on up through the end of chapter 5. The quiz after that will be on dictations drills starting with drill 10 on page 60, and all the way through chapter 5. This quiz will be on Tuesday October 13.

Ahlan Ya Tullaab Fi Arabic 503,

You have two quizzes coming up.

You will do Tamreen 17, Safha 141, and bring it to class on Thursday October 8. This will count as a take-home quiz. You will have to review the verb chart on page 130 for that. Your other quiz will be on Tuesday October 13. This will be on material from chapter 8.
