2009 CRITICAL LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIPS
FOR INTENSIVE SUMMER INSTITUTES

The United States Department of State and the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) are pleased to announce the availability of overseas scholarships for intensive summer language institutes in eleven critical need foreign languages for summer 2009.

ARABIC ● AZERBAIJANI ● BANGLA/BENGALI ● CHINESE ● HINDI
KOREAN ● PERSIAN ● PUNJABI ● RUSSIAN ● TURKISH ● URDU
Countries may include: Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India, Jordan, Morocco, Oman, Russia,
South Korea, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkey, or others where the target languages are spoken.

Critical Language Scholarships (CLS) provide seven to ten week group-based intensive language instruction and extensive cultural enrichment experiences at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels (beginning not offered for Azerbaijani, Russian, Chinese or Persian). Full program details and number of scholarships available per language are available on our website, www.CLScholarship.org.

The CLS Program is part of the National Security Language Initiative (NSLI), a U.S. government interagency effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers in any field.

Deadline to Apply: On-line application must be submitted by 11:59pm Eastern Standard Time

Quiz

Ahlan Ya Shebaab,

I thought I'd give you the heads up for our upcoming quiz. Depending on how the week will go, we will most probably have it on Thursday, 9/25 or perhaps on Tuesday, 9/30.

401 students:

The quiz will be on Units 2 and 3.

503 students:

The quiz will be on the Mufradat from chapter 8, and on the verb and Musdar conjugation charts on page 130 and page 131.

Interesting information

The Institute of International Education is pleased to announce the opening of the 2009-10 academic year competition for NSEP David L. Boren Scholarships for undergraduate students and NSEP David L. Boren Fellowships for graduate students. Boren Awards provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. students to add important international and language components to their educations.

Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 for an academic year's study abroad. Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 for language study and international research.

Applications and detailed information on the Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are now available on www.borenawards.org - our newly designed website.
The application deadline for the Boren Fellowship is January 29, and the deadline for the Boren Scholarship is February 11.

Quiz

Ahlan Arabic students,

Just to give you the heads up, but I thought that we should start thinking about our first quiz.

Arabic 401:

This quiz will be on Thursday, 9/11. It will be a spelling test which covers Unit One.

Arabic 503:

Your quiz will be on Tuesday, 9/16. It will cover ALL vocab from chapters 1-7. You will be asked to go from Arabic to English as well as from English to Arabic. Vocab only.
